W. Eugene Smith photography grants open
Photojournalists documenting the human condition can enter a competition.
The W. Eugene Smith Fund’s Grant in Humanistic Photography is presented yearly to a photographer whose past work and proposed project follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith’s photography and dedicated compassion.
The winner will receive a grant of US$35,000 to carry out or complete a major photographic essay. An additional US$5,000 will be given to one or more finalists, at the discretion of the jury. Awards will be presented at a ceremony held in New York.
Applications are also open for the Howard Chapnick Grant of US$5,000 for “champions of photography” such as photo editors, educators, researchers and photography leaders. The grant may be used to finance a program of further education, research, a special longterm sabbatical project or an internship.
The deadline is May 31. There is a US$50 application fee.
